Druglords of the Avenues, Re-Volts at Surf City Saloon - 2008-07-26

Ventured past the Orange Curtain last night to the Surf City Saloon in Huntington Beach to see my pals from the Swingin' Utters play in a couple of side project bands.

Johnny is in Druglords of the Avenues, who are more modern sounding punk outfit, with his unmistakably great punk vocals leading the charge.

Darius and Spike from the Utters play in the Re-Volts, a retro-y, more garage-y sounding outfit. Tasty and catchy as heck. Drummer for them was fun to watch. He has more of a garage-band style, very simple kit and blast to watch play. That guy is INTO it!

A big surprise was seeing Kevin W. playing bass for the Re-Volts. Kevin was the original bass player for the Utters and a all-around great guy.

Great to catch up with everyone and see some good tunes. Those guys are all still carrying the torch of passion for music, despite the hardships. While the door was only $5, this meant those guys got paid crap for playing their hearts out on stage. I really admire them for continuing on with playing music despite the odds.

Surf City Saloon is a decent place. HUGE beers for $8. Considering how expensive drinks are in Hollywood, this is not bad at all. I will definitely go back for a show (Don't worry though, I stayed sober the whole night. Had to drive back to LBC. No way I'm taking THAT chance.)

Another surprise of the night, was one of the opening acts, The Mighty Regis, and LA-based Irish folk/punk band. And by Irish, I mean they are literally all from Ireland, playing very traditional-inspired Irish punky tunes, much in the same vein as Dropkick Murphy's, Floggy Molly, and the Pogues. Super cool guys too. They play pretty regularly at Molly Malone's up in LA. Go check 'em out.
